The Universal Sigh - report by Nikki Grahame
Some people wait a life time to meet their hero's and still don't get to meet them, others wait just over an hour in a queue outside the Truman Brewery!
Radiohead are always full of surprises and as fans we eagerly await another album. After 2007's In Rainbows (one of my favorite albums of all time) a shock announcement is made at 3am 14th feb 2011 that the follow up to In Rainbows - 'King of Limbs' will be available for download on the 19th February! This was a truly special moment as it was completely unexpected!
On March 28th to promote King of Limbs going on sale on cd and vinyl the band announced they would be releasing newspapers all over the world- The Universal Sigh.
Inside this newspaper there authored pieces by Stanley Donwood, who designed most of the bands artwork since The Bends. And various illustrations by Zachariah and Donald Twain of Plants and Norse mythology.
The newspaper itself is a journey into the forest of nature, trees and woodlands. This is captured into meaningful mystical stories which allows your mind to run wild and be consumed to another dimension. There are also lyrics from tracks off King Of Limbs. On the back of the paper there is a qr code which may also reveal something, we have yet to discover, lets hope its confirmation of a king of limbs tour next year!
As I stood in a long line of people waiting to claim my copy of this intreguing free newspaper, I prayed they wouldn't run out by the time I got to the front.
They began distributing them at 12.15pm and as the queue went down, trails of fans walked past the line with their copy of the paper on show for all to see beaming with glee to themselves!
It got to around 1.20pm and whispers that the man himself Thom Yorke was actually in the vicinity? No way I thought! When suddenly he appeared walking down the line of people and handing out copies of his Universal Sigh! As he personally handed me my copy, the feeling of euphoria rushed through me to the point I thought I was going to faint! Everyone stood in amazement as he smiled and joked around, he was in fantastic form. I even managed to get him to look in my direction for a few pictures!
After around 15 minutes of him sharing his time with his worshipping fans he wandered into Rough Trade where by everybody followed waiting to see what was going to happen next!
As we all piled in to the building, 'Codex' was playing for all to hear! Had this actually just happened or was it all a dream? I don't think anything in my life will ever match this surreal magical moment. Thom had now disappeared out the back but everyone lingered cherishing the specialness of what had just occurred.
